In August 2021, Kimco Realty acquired Weingarten Realty Investors, a grocery-anchored shopping center owner, manager, and developer. Headquartered in Jericho, New York, Kimco Realty operates 27 offices throughout the United States and conducts business primarily in the first-ring suburbs of top major metropolitan markets.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In February 2023, Kimco Realty discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Kimco Realty determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and obtained this sensitive information contained in a former Weingarten Realty Investors network on or about February 8, 2023. On April 14, 2023, Kimco Realty began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Health insurance and other benefit plan information (e.g., pension information)
- Direct deposit information (e.g., bank and routing information)
