American Dental Association Data Breach Investigation

Located in Chicago, Illinois, the American Dental Association is a professional association for dentists and U.S. dental students. The American Dental Association’s mission is to support the dental profession while also supporting the advancement of the health of the public. Originally founded in 1859 by 26 dentists in Niagara Falls, New York, the American Dental Association has grown into an organization that drives scientific progress with its member base of over 160,000 dental professionals and students.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On April 21, 2022, the American Dental Association discovered it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information of individuals in its system may have been accessed and acquired. The American Dental Association disclosed that the data breach was a ransomware attack but has not yet disclosed the specific types of information exposed. However, various reports online indicate that the hackers responsible for the ransomware attack have posted a sample of the stolen data online. According to reports, the data posted online includes W2 forms, NDAs, accounting spreadsheets, and information on American Dental Association members. Recently, the American Dental Association began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
