Equitrans is a midstream services company based in Pennsylvania. Founded in 2018, Equitrans has an operational focus on gas transmission and storage systems, gas gathering systems, and water services that support natural gas development and production across the Appalachian Basin.2 As one of the largest natural gas gatherers in the United States, Equitrans provides midstream services to natural gas producers, along with commercial and industrial users, marketers, and local distribution companies.2 Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Equitrans employs over 500 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On November 30, 2023, Equitrans was informed that its external payroll provider, Paycor, Inc., had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Paycor determined that an unauthorized party may have accessed and acquired this sensitive information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit Transfer file sharing software, which Paycor uses. On January 5, 2024, Equitrans began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number
