Atrium Health is a healthcare provider that serves the greater Charolette area. A part of Advocate Health, one of the United States’ largest non-profit health systems, Atrium Health offers a wide range of services, including primary care, cancer care, cariology, behavioral health, rehabilitation, surgery, imaging, and orthopedic and musculoskeletal care. Additionally, Atrium Health performs extensive and contemporary research. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Atrium Health has 40 hospitals and over 1,400 locations across North Carolina and employs more than 70,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On May 31, 2023, a third-party vendor of Atrium Health, Nuance Communications, discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Nuance Communications determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file sharing platform between May 28 and 29, 2023. On September 22, 2023, Nuance Communications began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Address
- Health insurance information
- Medical information
- Demographic information
