The Children’s Home data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 1,100 individuals.

Children’s Home is a community service organization based in New York. Founded in 1912 as a home for women and children, Children’s Home has evolved into a comprehensive family services organization that provides residential, educational, preventative, and therapeutic care. To that end, Children’s Home offers six areas of assistance: behavioral and emotional health, therapeutic intervention and clinical treatment, leadership and development, physical health and wellness, community outreach and civic engagement, academic success and career readiness. Headquartered in Binghamton, New York, Children’s Home employs more than 400 individuals at 8 locations.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On June 13, 2023, Children’s Home discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Children’s Home determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through two employee email accounts. On November 10, 2023, Children’s Home began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Address
- Medical information (e.g., medical record number, patient account number, diagnosis and treatment information, clinical and prescription information, provider information)
- Health insurance information
