WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Barrick Gold discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Barrick Gold determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file sharing platform between May 28, 2023, and June 2, 2023. On October 27, 2023, Barrick Gold began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The exact type of personal information has not been made publicly available by Barrick Gold. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
- Financial information
- Medical information
- Taxpayer information
- Personal identification number issued by the United States IRS
