Milan Eye Center Data Breach Investigation

As a provider of eye care and surgery, Milan Eye Center offers a variety of procedures and services, including comprehensive eye care, LASIK surgery, oculoplastic treatment, and corneal transplants. Additionally, Milan Eye Center treats patients with astigmatism, dry eye syndrome, age-related macular degeneration, myopia, presbyopia, and various other eye conditions. Operating since 2009, Milan Eye Center’s team consists of 20 ophthalmologists and optometrists . To best serve its patients, Milan Eye Center has 8 locations, with 6 surgery centers, in the greater Atlanta area, including in Alpharetta, Canton, Dawsonville, Marietta, Buford, Cumming, Johns Creek, and Snellville.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On December 9, 2022, Milan Eye Center discovered that one of its former vendors, iMedicWare, Inc., had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to Milan Eye Center patients may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Milan Eye Center determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed historical patient archives belonging to Milan Eye Center patients between May 18, 2020, and July 23, 2020. On August 23, 2023, Milan Eye Center began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information (e.g., location received services, date of service, and health status)
