National Student Clearinghouse Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating National Student Clearinghouse regarding its recent data breach. The National Student Clearinghouse data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals. 

ABOUT NATIONAL STUDENT CLEARNINGHOUSE:

National Student Clearinghouse is a non-profit organization aimed at aiding and serving students, administrators, and educational institutions. Additionally, National Student Clearinghouse helps individuals and organizations identify solutions for reducing costs, enhancing quality of service, and improving efficiency. Founded in 1993, National Student Clearinghouse claims to save higher education institutions over $750 million annually. Headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, National Student Clearinghouse provides services to over 3,600 colleges and universities and over 22,000 high schools.  

WHAT HAPPENED?

On May 29, 2023, National Student Clearinghouse discovered that one of its third-party software tools, MOVEit Transfer, had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, National Student Clearinghouse determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive personal identifiable information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer application. Recently, National Student Clearinghouse posted a notice of the breach on its website, which states that it is conducting an extensive investigation with assistance from outside experts and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. The exact type of personal information has not been made publicly available by National Student Clearinghouse
