Accordingly, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care offers medical insurance to employers and individuals, as well as those eligible for Medicare and Medicaid. Founded by doctors in 1969, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care provides services to more than 1.1 million members in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, and New Hampshire. In 2021, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care merged with Tufts Health Plan and a new company was formed—Point32Health. Point32Health is headquartered in Canton, Massachusetts, and employs approximately 1,500 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On April 17, 2023, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and obtained this sensitive information through a ransomware attack from March 28, 2023 to April 17, 2023. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care also determined that current and former members of Health Plans Inc. may have been impacted. While its investigation is ongoing, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care reported that it intends to provide notice to the individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Taxpayer identification number
- Contact information
- Medical information (e.g., medical history, diagnosis, treatment, dates of service, provider names)
- Health insurance information
