MCNA Dental is a dental benefits administrator that provides services to state agencies and managed care organizations for their Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Programs (CHIP), and Medicare members. Additionally, MCNA Dental offers dental plans to private employers, individuals, and families. Founded in 1992, MCNA Dental is one of the United States’ largest government-sponsored dental care and oral health insurance providers. In fact, MCNA Dental became the first dental plan in the country to be awarded full URAC Dental Plan Accreditation. Headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, MCNA Dental employs over 500 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On March 6, 2023, MCNA Dental discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, MCNA Dental determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and acquired this sensitive information between February 26, 2023 and March 7, 2023. Furthermore, on March 7, 2023, a known ransomware group took responsibility for the breach and later published all of the data it acquired from MCNA Dental on its website. On May 26, 2023, MCNA Dental began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
- Date of birth
- Address
- Medical information (e.g., visits, dentist name, doctor name, past care, x-rays/photos, medicines, treatment)
- Bills and insurance claims
- Health insurance information (e.g., plan information, insurance company, member number, Medicaid-Medicare ID numbers)
- Contact information
